After years of designing and developing static websites, I entered into the world of software development, designing the user interface of robust tools used to bring transparency and cost savings to the data-driven world of pharmacy benefit. In this same spirit, I worked closely with internal product shareholders to bring everyone closer to the center of the design process.
While Truveris was still a small start-up, I wore many hats, including product manager and front end developer. RxChoice was a successful design/build project which helped secure funding and proof-of-concept for more advanced projects going forward. RxChoice carved out pharmacy benefits from health plans to build a separate provider infrastructure where they transparently competed to produce best price vs. service plans.
This product walk-through which was produced with the help of the product and engineering teams highlights the user interface and basic function of RxChoice
I worked directly with the CIO, and CTO during development prototyping features, then committing the final code directly to the repository for use in the actual product. I worked closely with engineering to design features for quick implementation. This fast-tracked project was delivered on time and led to the company's first B2C, additional funding, as well as a revolutionary product providing hundreds of thousands of people with cost savings on prescription medication.
The concept was simple and intuitive, but implementation was incredibly complex, and multifaceted. Taking a huge amount of data and distilling it visually into organized, attractive, and pdf reports via a web platform was one of the many unique challenges of designing for RxChoice. The video below is a soup-to-nuts tour of the product.
Working closely with project managers and industry specialists I used RxChoice as a springboard to design the workflow, as well as the entire user interface. Building off of the existing design system, COMP was used by pharmaceutical companies to generate detailed tracking analytics for physical and digital coupon programs. Each program generated by the software used the UI system and best practices I helped to establish in prior projects.
Flexible web and print templates were used for quick integration of digital and print assets. Careful client A/B testing led to a smooth and speedy design phase for every program. I introduced InCopy to the product team to manage extensive client-side legal copy and design changes.
My responsibilities included UI/UX and visual design components for this product. In addition to unique interface design requirements, the data entry portion of the mocks had to be real-world and worst-case to account for possible edge cases in display or graphic feedback.
In order to provide transparency into their process COMP provided an entire UI dedicated to the input and feedback of physical and virtual coupon programs. Users could then adjust details of their program in order to best optimize outcomes for patients as well as the company's bottom line.
The Truveris NDI National Drug Index was a responsive web widget which could be adapted to a number of use-cases and screen sizes. Among other technologies, the NDI helped secure Truveris $25M in funding after deployment.
NDI provided measurements of the prices paid by private insurers, self-insured organizations, government, unions and uninsured patients. Calculating the average price for all prescription drugs, weighted by utilization, the NDI calculated both the out-of-pocket costs paid by the patient and the amount covered by commercial plans, Medicaid and Medicare.
OneRx quickly became a top rated app due in no small part to the team’s focus on user experience data to drive design decisions accumulated during the development of the projects above. At this point I stepped away from code to focus on user interface design as well as branding. I also built and managed a team of talented designers and front-end developers. OneRx was an incredible project with a fantastic team of talented folks. I'm proud to have been a part of it.
